Top tips for Sewing Buttonholes.

  • Measure twice! When you are marking your garment before you sew the buttonholes, double check your measurements and take a look to make sure they are all lined up neatly.

  • Use a buttonhole opening tool, like a small chisel, on a protective mat, to cut clean holes every time.

  • If the fabric in the buttonhole is fraying, use some fray check to stop it from looking messy.

  • Buttonholes should ‘point’ in the direction of most pull at points of resistance. i.e. horizontal on trouser flies.

  • Use a top stitching thread or contrast colour to make a feature of your buttonholes.

  • Test out your buttonhole on scrap fabrics first. Layer them up to the same thickness as your finished garment for a true test.

Now you’re confident at sewing buttonholes, why not have a go at sewing a garment with lots of them on!
