What is Sew Your Own Style?

Sew Your Own Style is a free to join, self-guided programme of thinking prompts, practical tasks and evaluation resources designed to empower sewists like you to start thinking like a designer for your own wardrobe. You will learn to explore and embrace your own authentic style and dress to express yourself with confidence. At the end of the programme, you will have a clear picture of your own style and what garments you want to make and wear to express this!

Week 1 we’ll do a deep dive Wardrobe Audit and look at what you already have, what you actually wear and identify any gaps that need filling. You’ll create your making manifesto and some important guiding res-sew-lutions!

Week 2 we’ll explore how you feel about your clothes and how your clothes make you feel. We’ll explore how you can communicate and define your own style through your clothing.

Week 3 we’ll be starting to think like a designer, looking at how to process inspiration and creating mood boards and doing shop reports – it’s going to be so much fun!

Week 4 we’ll look at how you can begin to express your authentic self and start to plan and design a wardrobe of clothes to do so!

When does Sew Your Own Style run?

The Sew Your Own Style programme begins on 1st May 2024. There will be a post each week on this programme portal which will include all the information and resources you need to complete that week’s tasks. I’ll send you an in an encouraging bite-sized email with snippets from the weeks focus and other sources of inspiration each weekday with a summary each Saturday throughout May.  So even if you only have 20 minutes on your lunch break or a little weekend reading time between chores, you can start to think more intentionally about Sewing Your Own Style.

If at any time you wish to stop receiving emails, simply unsubscribe (this will unsubscribe you from all MHW emails but you can sign up again at the end of May if you wish), you will still be able to access all the programme content on the portal free for 2 months after 1st May 2024.

Do I need to complete all the tasks and is there a deadline?

Following all the daily prompts will enable you to fully understand your style and the requirements of your wardrobe, and then plan and design a wardrobe of clothes that truly fit your style and your lifestyle. Even if you only have little time, you can still utilise the prompts and the weekly summary to start thinking more intentionally about sewing your own wardrobe to suit your own personal style. There is no deadline, and it doesn’t matter if you don’t complete all the tasks each week or if you dip in and out, do what feels worthwhile to you! Content will be available free on the portal for 2 months from 1st May 2024.

Bringing together our Sew Your Own Style community…

The sewing community is full of support and encouragement. Let’s support each other to empower one another to sew clothes that make us feel like our best selves.

If you would like to, please do share your findings and progress on Instagram using the hashtag #SewYourOwnStyle24.

However, this process is a personal journey and you may not feel you want to share it, it maybe something you do just for you. So if you don’t wish to share that is also respected.

If you’re not on Instagram please do email me any pictures of your progress and any thoughts, with your permission, I’ll share these in the daily emails so we can all inspire each other. If you wish to share anonymously that is also very welcome.

I can’t wait to start the Sew Your Own Style programme with you on 1st May (make sure you sign up by then if you’re not already)!

In the next post I’ll share some quick, fun tasks to kick start your thinking about what you wear and how it makes your feel!
